SUSTAINABLE CITY AWARD 2022 IN CELEBRATION OF WORLD URBAN PLANNING DAY 2022
PUTRAJAYA, 10 November – YBhg. Datuk M Noor Azman bin Taib, Secretary General of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has completed the 2022 Sustainable Cities Appreciation Ceremony organized by PLANMalaysia (Urban and Rural Planning Department) in conjunction with the celebration of World Urban Planning Day on 8 November 2022. This appreciation ceremony was broadcast live (FB Live) on PLANMalaysia's Facebook page.
This 2022 Sustainable City Award is one of PLANMalaysia's initiatives to appreciate and give recognition to Local Authorities (PBT) who are committed to implementing sustainable urban development initiatives in this country through the measurement of Malaysia Urban Rural National Indicators Network for Sustainable Development (MURNInets).
The 2022 Sustainable City Award, which was first introduced in 2013, is given based on four (4) categories, namely:
1. Best Sustainable City Award 2021 by PBT Category;
2. Sustainable City Special Appreciation;
3. Appreciation of SDG 11; and
4. PBT appreciation for the State of Sabah.
A total of 127 PBTs have participated and been evaluated through MURNInets, namely 98 PBTs in Peninsular Malaysia, 3 PBTs in the Federal Territory and 26 PBTs in the State of Sabah. Of these, 84 PBTs (66%) are at a sustainable level and managed to achieve a sustainability level percentage of over 80 percent. While 43 PBTs (34%) achieved medium sustainable status with the achievement of a percentage of sustainability levels ranging from 50 to 79 percent.
The selection criteria for the Best Sustainable City Award are based on
1. Overall Sustainability Index achievement percentage;
2. The percentage of increase in the achievement of the Sustainability Index;
3. Percentage of Happiness Index score achievement (KT3-P5);
4. The percentage of achievement of the Resident Satisfaction Level Score towards Local Government Services (UT1-P1); and
5. Data accuracy.
Congratulations to all the recipients of the Best Sustainable Town Award 2022. 11 PBTs have been selected as the Most Sustainable PBT areas where Kuantan, Selayang and Kampar are the most sustainable cities according to their respective PBT categories. This includes a special award given to the Putrajaya Corporation and one Sabah State PBT which is MP Sandakan.
The sustainable development initiative drawn up by PLANMalaysia is in line with the direction of KPKT under the Liveable Malaysia Agenda. This agenda also focuses on the well-being of urban communities in line with the Shared Prosperity Vision (WKB) 2030 and the 12th Malaysia Plan towards achieving a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable society.
